THANKSGIVING
“Thanksgiving”
First of all, this is not a Christian holiday. For those of us who are “called” by His name”, every day should be a day of gratitude and thanksgiving, not to be relegated to a date on the calendar. Whatever may be going on right now, no matter the hardships, we still confess that God is indeed good!
According to dictionary.com, ‘Thanksgiving is the act of giving thanks; grateful acknowledgement of benefits or favors, especially to God; a public celebration in acknowledgment of divine favor or kindness, a day set apart for giving thanks to God.’ There are numerous scriptures that we could recite, like Psalm 136:1. May we reflect on those.
Tomorrow, many people will gather around the table, for good food and fellowship; hopefully done with a spirit of gratitude. Unfortunately, some will not be able to gather this year for various reasons such as Covid protocols for the safety of ourselves and our loved ones, what is being called food “insecurity, illness, etc. Unfortunately, some will have empty chairs because of loved ones who have transitioned or perhaps someone’s season of participation in your life’s journey has come to an end.
In deference to our Indeginous/Native Americans, the ones for whom this land was home before the ships filled with pilgrims arrived on these shores, we acknowledge the emotions that this “holiday” evokes. It is not a time of celebration for them. Instead, it is a National Day of Mourning, a reminder of the slaughter and displacement of millions onto reservations. Disenfranchised.
Although 2020 has been unlike anything our generation has ever seen with so many challenges to our faith, we still proclaim that God is good. May we maintain an attitude of gratitude!
Blessings!
