The PLUMB LINE Test

This is what he showed me: The Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb, with a plumb line in his hand. And the Lord asked me, “What do you see, Amos?” “A plumb line,” I replied. Then the Lord said, “Look, I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.” (Amos 7:7-8).

According to Bible Study Tools, "a plumb line is a tool that is used by *masons and other contractors to build walls that are straight up and down--- at a perfect right angle to the earth, so as to align with the gravitational pull."  It actually has a weight on one end of a string and is used to make sure that a wall is straight while a building is under construction.  A wall that is NOT straight is a disaster waiting to happen!

**A wall that is crooked will not be able to support the roof and the rest of the structure.  For example, if the vertical sides of this bench was not "plumb" or straight, then they could not support the "top" or anything placed on top of it.

One of the minor prophets, Amos,  was sent by God to the people      of Israel in the Old Testament to warn them that if their lives and       behavior  did not "measure up" to what God required of them in the Law delivered by Moses, punishment from God was  eminent!        The wall represented the Law.

We know that Jesus came to fulfill the Law not for us to ignore it (Matthew 5:17-20).  However, even now in 2024 the plumb line is a guide for those of us who have accepted Christ as our Savior through grace and faith.  It represents the stardard of what God still holds as "true and correct".

How do you measure up?

Blessings!
