DON'T LOOK BACK

Now that we all have had the opportunity to say “goodbye”, “adios”, ”wiedersehen”, “au revoir”, “sayonara”, etc  to 2020, let’s commit to not look back

Scripture: Genesis 19:15,17,26

Most if not all of us are probably familiar with the story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.  God destroyed both because of  the wickedness of the people.  It turns out that Abraham’s nephew, Lot, and his family lived in Sodom but they were righteous.

God sent angels to escort Lot and the rest of the family out of the city before He destroyed it with fire and brimstone. (Verse 15)  The instruction the angel gave was “don’t look back”! (Verse 17)  All Mrs. Lot  had to do was to obey by leaving and not looking back. However, she did not resist the temptation to do so just that.

The consequence of her disobedience was that  she turned into a “pillar of salt”. (Verse 26) We have no indication as to whether she did that because she had fond memories from her time there or if she was just curious about what was happening. Either way,  the price she paid was steep.   Interestingly, according to a 2019 Reuters report made by Israeli researchers, that pillar of salt is believed to still exist overlooking the dead sea.

Luke 9:62 NKJV reads “But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”  The Message says it this way.  Jesus said, “No procrastination. No backward looks. You can’t put God’s kingdom off till tomorrow. Seize the day.” May we “seize the day” without giving in to the temptation to hang on to unforgiveness, revisit painful memories, revive old habits that were not beneficial, or anything that can hinder our journey forward.   Remember that there are many who started out with us in 2020, who are no longer with us.  God has purpose and plans for each of our lives in this new year.  Let’s not disappoint Him.

Blessings.
